Museum of Islay Life
Port Charlotte. Open daily, Easter-October, Sunday afternoons and by appointment. Award-winning displays of archaeology and island life. Library and archive, including photographs.
A picturesque coastal village of whitewashed houses where the street names are still in Gaelic. The Youth Hostel here is combined with a field centre which features a nature library, laboratory, lecture room and exhibitions, housed in the old distillery warehouse.

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Reserve at Gruinart
The reserve's Visitor Centre occupies the north-west quadrant of the island. Converted barns house video cameras and high-power binoculars for visitors use.
